Scope and Contents
This collection consists of records of the Villa Spelman from 1961 to 2009, with the bulk of the material dating from 1980 to 2000. It includes photographs, materials marketing Villa Spelman colloquia and other events, correspondence with the Spelman family, Villa Spelman Advisory Committee records, a video promoting Villa Spelman to the Trustees, oral histories with Villa Spelman staff), and other records maintained by the Director of Villa Spelman.

Biographical / Historical
The Johns Hopkins Center for Italian Studies at Villa Spelman was established in the early 1970s in accordance with the bequest of Leolyn and Timothy Mather Spelman, who had spent much of their lives in the centuries-old building. In 1985 the center was dedicated to the memory of Charles S. Singleton, the internationally renowned scholar of Dante and medieval and Renaissance literature, who was a professor of Italian literature at Johns Hopkins for many years.
The property was sold by the university in September 2008.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Transferred from Elizabeth Cropper, former Director of Villa Spelman, in 1998, and Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Dean's Office in 2007. Additional files were transferred by Elizabeth Cropper in April 2023.
