"Lernt Deutschland kennen!" postcard collection
Content Description
This collection includes seventy postcards created between 1930 and 1963. Each card measures 4 x 6 inches and is printed in black and white on one side only. The postcards were created as a part of the illustrated series titled "Lernt Deutschland kennen!” or “Get to know Germany,” in which each card features a photograph and short description of a town or landmark. The postcards include pre-printed stamps of Paul von Hindenburg, Adolf Hitler, and Martin Luther. Some cards, issued during the extent of the Third Reich, feature towns in modern-day Austria and Poland.

Biographical / Historical
This postcard series appears to have started in the late 1930s or early 1940s, when Paul von Hindenburg’s face was still used on German stamps. In 1941, new definitive stamps, with Adolf Hitler in profile, were issued, and a six penny stamp in this design is pre-printed on the majority of the cards in the present collection. The series must have been a feature of life in Germany at the time and beyond: the final postcard in the group, the only post-War card in the collection, features a fifteen penny stamp with Martin Luther dated 1963, which was first issued in 1961.
