Photograph album of military service in Korea, 1950 - 1959

 Item — Box: 12

Scope and Contents

This photograph album depicts black-and-white photographs of US soldiers, many of them Black, during their service in Korea. The one dated photograph says August 1959, so these photographs may be from US servicemembers stationed in South Korea after the end of the Korean War. The album was likely compiled by a member of the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry, due to a photographed sign for that unit's headquarters appearing in the album. Photographs show soldiers at work and relaxing on base; street scenes of Korean temples, homes, and businesses with signs in Korean and English; interactions with local Korean people, mostly women; and portrait photographs of Black family or other loved ones back home.

The album's cover is heavily chipped, but the surviving decoration shows a map of Korea with locations in both North and South Korea marked, and no border between North and South. One corner of the album has been reinforced with black electrical tape.
