Scope and Contents
The site of Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church was purchased in 1874 by Trustees of the African American Episcopal Church from John H. Smith, John C. Smith, and Harriet Smith. The title "Mt. Moriah" was not used until 1876. The congregation may have formed as early as 1799, although the first African American Methodist Episcopal Church of Annapolis was not formed until 1803.The architect of the building is unknown, and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
