George W. Jones chromolithograph postcard of Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church, approximately 1920
Scope and Contents
The site of Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church was purchased in 1874 by Trustees of the African American Episcopal Church from John H. Smith, John C. Smith, and Harriet Smith. The title "Mt. Moriah" was not used until 1876. The congregation may have formed as early as 1799, although the first African American Methodist Episcopal Church of Annapolis was not formed until 1803.
The architect of the building is unknown, and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. At the time of this writing, the church is now home to The Banneker-Douglass Museum, named for Benjamin Banneker and Frederick Douglass, dedicated on February 24, 1984. The museum was established to preserve Maryland's African American history, created by a community-led effort to transform the former Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church building into a museum. The present edifice of worship for the Mt. Moriah A.M.E Church was constructed on Bay Ridge Avenue in Annapolis, Maryland.
