 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

This subseries contains, in subject and then chronological order: record inserts (statements made by Senator Mathias in the Congressional Record); reprints from the Congressional Record (these could be duplicates of the record inserts or a better copy); press releases; speeches, statements, and articles; National Journal and Congressional Quarterly articles, among others. Materials date from 1959 to 1988 with undated materials included. Most of the speeches, statements, articles, reprints and press releases are originals. The record inserts are photocopies of the originals due to the use of newsprint for the Congressional Record. (Source: Adapted from a statement written by MAP, Mathias staffer, February 27, 1987)

Historical note on the Historical File series

The Historical File for Senator Mathias was started in 1975. It continued to expand in the years 1978 to 1986. The files were created as a record of the Senator’s position on various issues so that staff could quickly reference past statements and positions. The file was created at the request of Senator Mathias by Ann Cook, Randy Dove, and Mary Cannon. Many people worked on the file over many years, mostly summer interns and, on occasion, a few paid temporary employees. The historical file was used by all staff members either on personal or committee staffs. It was a quick reference for finding information on legislation introduced or co-sponsored by the senator. It also provided background information if a staffer was writing a speech or an introduction to legislation. It was used prior to campaign years for preparation for issue books and debate topics during a campaign. (Source: Adapted from a statement written by MAP, Mathias staffer, February 27, 1987)
