Abstract

The scrapbook which forms this collection is a bound volume containing around fifty illustrations representative of the subjects and style of nineteenth-century British book illustration. In the scrapbook are caricatures, cartoons, foreign scenes, social commentary, and hand-colored engravings.

Abstract This collection contains three handwritten letters written by Dame Kathleen Furse to Sir Gavin Rylands de Beer, dated from 1941 to 1945. Also included are a published image of Furse and a printed image of the cover of her autobiography, Hearts and Pomegranates, published in 1940. Furse was a pioneer in the British Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs), and eventual Director of the Women's Royal Naval Service and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Abstract

This item is a hand-drawn and illuminated Jewish mourning certificate, created by P.L. Weinstein in the 1880s or 1890s. The certificate appears to have been made on behalf of a son in honor of his late father, David Zelig. The creator, P.L. Weinstein of Baltimore, was possibly a professional calligrapher and illuminator.
