Abstract Starting in the spring of 1915, during World War I, some women in unoccupied France volunteered for the role of "war godmothers," marraines de guerre. To provide the moral support these men, so-called "war orphans," could not receive from their families, women in unoccupied areas became their pen pals. Edna St. Vincent Millay (February 22, 1892 - October 19, 1950) was an American lyrical poet and playwright and the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Collection consists of a one page letter containing a 14-line handwritten poem. An envelope is included and post-marked in New York in 1954, four years after the author's death.
