Abstract

The scrapbook which forms this collection is a bound volume containing around fifty illustrations representative of the subjects and style of nineteenth-century British book illustration. In the scrapbook are caricatures, cartoons, foreign scenes, social commentary, and hand-colored engravings.

Scope and Contents The scrapbook (1914) which forms this collection was assembled by Baltimore judge, Emory Hamilton Niles. Many of the items in the scrapbook are in German and reflect a brief but significant few months, July to November, in 1914. Abstract

This collection consists of an original color lithograph entitled “Les Amazones de la Seine,” created and signed by Eugéne Morsabeau Rosambeau in 1870. The print depicts a group of a dozen Prussian soldiers brought to surrender by members of the “Amazones de la Seine,” a French female military faction during the Siege of Paris (1870-1871).

The Jean-Marie Goulemot Dreyfus affair collection contains published and illustrated material that documents the trial of Alfred Dreyfus, accused of treason in 1894 during the French Third Republic (1871-1940). Samson Feldman (circa 1901-1983) began submitting political cartoons to The Baltimore Sun after graduating from Baltimore City College. This collection contains 33 printed cartoons that were published in The Evening Sun editions of The Baltimore Sun from 1917 to 1918.
