Horatio Beauman Young papers

Horatio Beauman Young entered the British Navy in 1819 and was appointed commander of the HMS Hydra in 1843. This collection, dating from 1834-1850, documents ongoing British efforts to suppress the slave trade in that area.

John Stuart Mill letters

Abstract

Collection of English philosopher and economist, John Stuart Mill, consists of over 300 holographic letters written to him by noted economists, philosophers, theologians, and political figures of the nineteenth century. Drafts of Mill's replies are included along with 43 holographic letters written by Mill to Auguste Comte, 1841-1847. Most of the correspondence is published.

Scope and Contents

Manuscript copy of the drama written by Bate himself in the style of a printed book with imprint statement: "London : Printed with a pen, by Fredk. Bate, 1838."

Contains amendments and additions in Bate's hand. Also includes some stage instructions. Written on thick paper in an 8vo volume in a contemporary full calf bining, spine fully gilt, lettered "The student," on a red leather label.

Samuel Oldknow business records

Samuel Oldknow was the first successful maker of British muslin in the 18th century. The records, dating from 1787 to 1811, consist of approximately 75 items which include correspondence, pay-tickets, receipts, ledgers, account and memorandum books, shop-notes, and documents.

Abstract

The item is a stipple engraved fan, printed with: "The Way of the World. A Tale" and depicts six humorous figures, representing "Report," "Hearsay," "SomeBody," "Every-Body," "No-Body," "Candour," with a descriptions beneath. The fan was published by Sarah Ashton of Little Britain, London, on January 1 1796, registered with Stationers' Company, the preeminnent London printing and publishing guild.
