Abstract

Alfred North Whitehead was an English mathematician and philosopher born on the Isle of Thanet in 1861. The bulk of the collection is formed by correspondence between members of the Whitehead family: Alfred North Whitehead, his wife, Evelyn, their son, T. North and his wife, Margaret dating from the 1920s-1940s.

Broadside advertising American elk exhibition at the Lyceum Theatre, London

Abstract

In 1765, a building was erected on an adjacent site of today's Lyceum Theatre by the architect James Payne for exhibitions and, later, for other entertainments. The theatre finally became a licensed house in 1809. One of these entertainments was that of the exhibition of an American Elk in 1792, as noted in this broadside printed in 1792 in London.

Dame Katharine Furse handwritten letters to Sir Gavin Rylands de Beer with photographs

Abstract This collection contains three handwritten letters written by Dame Kathleen Furse to Sir Gavin Rylands de Beer, dated from 1941 to 1945. Also included are a published image of Furse and a printed image of the cover of her autobiography, Hearts and Pomegranates, published in 1940. Furse was a pioneer in the British Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs), and eventual Director of the Women's Royal Naval Service and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. English indentures regarding settlement of husbands' wills by their widows

Abstract

An indenture is a legal contract that reflects a debt or purchase obligation. This collection includes four 19th century English indentures, regarding the settlement of their husbands' wills by their widows. The indentures include the names of the husbands and wives, and the names of witnesses who attest to the existence of the marriages. The contracts are dated from 1866 to 1867.

English land indenture with three attachments

Abstract

This holding is a 17th century English land indenture on parchment, with the primary parchment measuring 46.5 x 62 mm, in addition to three separate documents attached with a dependent loop. The indenture details the purchase of the lands in and around the village of Belton, County Rutland (known today as Belton-in-Rutland). The parchment spans October 1, 1614 to January 1615.
