Abstract
Douglas Southall Freeman (1886 – 1953) was an American historian, biographer, newspaper editor, and author best known for his multi-volume biographies of Robert E. Lee and George Washington. The collection spans the years 1902-1911, and consists primarily of correspondence between Freeman and his parents.

Papers consist largely of Edward Spencer's personal papers although there are some papers of his parents and of his grandson Gellert S. Alleman. Edward Spencer's papers relate to his literary career. The earliest papers are school notebooks from the Trinity School in Baltimore (1848-49) and Princeton University (1853-58). William Churchill, philologist, ethnologist, and writer, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1859. He was appointed United States consul-general to Samoa (1896-1899) where he pursued his interest in philology and ethnology. Churchill also studied African languages and culture but less seriously than those of Polynesia.
