Horace Porter typescripts

Overview Horace Porter (1837-1921) was an American soldier and diplomat who served as an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, personal secretary to General and President Ulysses S. Grant and to General William T. Sherman, vice president of the Pullman Palace Car Company and U.S. Ambassador to France from 1897 to 1905. The collection consists of four typescripts presumably written by Porter, but dating from approximately 1923.

Overview John Weatherburn was born in the village of Kenton, England, April 23, 1750 and immigrated to the United States in 1772. The collection consists of a diary, letterbook, daybook, and two journals of Baltimore merchant, John Weatherburn ranging from 1766-1816.

Overview Edward "Ted" Athelstan Marshall was born Edward Howard Marshall on May 8, 1920 in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Johns Hopkins University from 1939 to 1943, where he majored in English Literature. Upon commencement, Marshall joined the U.S. Army infantry the same year. He was killed in combat in Europe on November 10, 1944.
