Jeremy Bentham letter

Scope and Contents The collection is formed by one unpublished, holographic letter of the English jurist, Jeremy Bentham, to Sir Samuel Romilly (1757-1818) dated June 15, 1807. The letter was written during a period when Bentham was concerned with the reform of the Scottish courts and had written a pamphlet, "Scotch Reform...In a Series of Letters to the Right Honorable Lord Grenville." Pocock, a historian of political thought and professor emeritus at Johns Hopkins University. His papers spans the years of 1962 to 2017, with the majority of the materials dating from Pocock's time at Hopkins. This holding notably includes his handwritten manuscripts of Barbarism and Religion (1999).

John Stuart Mill letters

Abstract

Collection of English philosopher and economist, John Stuart Mill, consists of over 300 holographic letters written to him by noted economists, philosophers, theologians, and political figures of the nineteenth century. Drafts of Mill's replies are included along with 43 holographic letters written by Mill to Auguste Comte, 1841-1847. Most of the correspondence is published.

Margery Pope was approximately born in 1909 and apparently lived her life in and around Southampton, England during World War II. This item is a recipe book once owned by Pope and also includes loose recipes, printed and handwritten, which were previously inserted in the book's rear pocket. Scope and Contents The bound, holographic petition (144 pages) which forms this collection is entitled "On the Justice and Policy of Repealing the Laws Prohibiting the Emigration of Artizans and the Exportation of Machinery." Although the petition is unsigned, it is likely that it was written by a member of Parliament in 1825 during the period when the Select Committee on the Laws Relating to the Export of Tools and Machinery was convened. On page 6, the petitioner describes himself as a "novice politician."...
