Arrangement
As none of the envelopes were ever used, and therefore offer no concrete date or recipient information, they are arranged according to their imagery. The envelopes are first divided between Union and Confederate and thereafter by the subject, symbol, or motif depicted on the envelopes. They were arranged with a numerical catalogue system before their arrival at Special Collections, and the numbers are believed to correspond with an enclosed list of subjects (e.g. 'George Washington' or 'Eagle'). Some subsections, such as 'Individuals A-Z' are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the individual depicted. Other subsections, such as 'Flag' are divided by the placement of the image on the envelope, i.e. flag on the right or left corner.
