Scope and Contents

The collection consists of four playing cards hand painted on skin prepared by the rawhide method and used by the Native American Apache tribe in the Southwest. An exact date for the cards cannot be established, but most likely they were created approximately 1880.

Biographical / Historical

The Apache Indian Tribe designed and created playing cards that were adapted from standard Spanish-Mexican designs. In the second half of the 19th century, Apache tribesmen in the Southwestern United States were known to play a card game based on Monte, a Spanish game of chance. The cards were made of skin and painted with colors similar to those used on Spanish cards.

This collection was donated to the University from the estate of John Work Garrett. It is likely the collection was purchased by Garrett before 1942.
