Scope and Contents

The W. Edwin Moffett papers, approximately 1889-1953, contain correspondence, programs, and other documents related to Moffett's activities as a musician in Baltimore. The bulk of the postcards and letters are from other musicians or arts administrators in Baltimore in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Many of the concert programs list Moffett as one of the performers. Ensembles and organizations represented include the Florestan Club, the Johns Hopkins Musical Association, the Baltimore Music Club, the Women's String Symphony Orchestra, and the Haydn Musical Association.

Biographical / Historical

W. Edwin Moffett (1871-1957) was a double bass player in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from its inaugural season in 1916 until 1948. He performed in numerous musical ensembles in Baltimore and was a member of the Baltimore Music Club, the Musical Union of Baltimore, and the Saturday Night Club.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Recorded as accession 1996.7A. Based on an accession log, this collection was apparently included in a gift from Dorothea Ortmann-Seletzky in 1996. The gift included the family papers of Otto Ortmann.
