Biographical / Historical

Donald S. Sutherland (1939- ) is an organist and former coordinator of the Organ Department faculty at the Peabody Conservatory. At Syracuse University he studied with Arthur Poister, earned a Master of Music degree, and then served on the faculty at the university's School of Music starting in 1965. He also learned informally from organist Vernon de Tar. In 1971 Sutherland became the director of music ministries for the Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, Maryland, and remained in the role until 1999.

Sutherland joined the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory in 1975 and became coordinator of the Organ Department, a position he held until his retirement from full-time teaching in 2016. He consulted with Peabody Conservatory administration and the Holtkamp Organ Company on the design and installation of the organ in the Peabody Institute's Leith Symington Griswold Hall. In 1998 he gave the inaugural recital on the instrument. The Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association gave Sutherland the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1997.

Sutherland maintained an active performance and teaching schedule throughout his career, appearing as a soloist and with major international ensembles. As a member and officer of the American Guild of Organists, Sutherland appeared at many AGO conventions as a recitalist, workshop leader, or choral conductor. Composers such as Gunther Schuller, Richard Felciano, Rachel Laurin, and William Albright dedicated works to Sutherland, who often performed new music.

In the 1970s and early 1980s Sutherland performed frequently as part of a duo with his wife, soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson, who would also become a Peabody Conservatory faculty member. Sutherland and Bryn-Julson recorded the album Organ and Voice, released by Gothic Records in 1982.
