Frank B. Cahn scrapbooks
Scope and Contents
The Frank B. Cahn scrapbooks, 1910-1948, contain preservation copies of two scrapbooks assembled by Cahn, a Baltimore-area financier and amateur violinist. The volume labeled "Theatre Record and Scrapbook" contains programs and clippings from mostly chamber music and symphony orchestra concerts, from approximately 1910 to 1948, from Baltimore and other places. Includes programs from the Flonzaley and Kneisel Quartets and from concerts at the Peabody Institute.
The volume labeled "Music Book" documents the activities of Cahn's string quartet from 1912 to 1943, including a register of the dates the quartet met, the pieces they played, and the additional players who joined the group on occasion. The quartet met at Cahn's home in Baltimore County. Regular members were Cahn and Theodor Hemberger, violin; Charles H. Bochau (and later Howard Thatcher), viola; and Bart Wirtz, cello. Bochau was the "scribe" of the scrapbook until he died in 1932 and was succeeded by Thatcher.
