Scope and Contents
The Judith Sylvia Gray music manuscripts, 1967-2022, contain unpublished scores of about 25 works composed by Gray from 1969 to 1994. Gray wrote music for solo piano, chamber ensembles, large ensembles, and chorus. Some works, such as Paper Child, contain settings of the composer's own words. Score formats include holographs, facsimiles, and engraved copies.
The collection also contains one folder of Gray's memoirs and other biographical materials, seven audio cassettes of Gray's compositions, and Gray's musical analysis of two works by other composers for her Master of Music degree.

Biographical / Historical
Judith Sylvia Gray (1942-2023) is a composer and painter based in Salisbury, Maryland. She attended the Peabody Conservatory in the 1960s, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in music theory in 1967 and a Master of Music degree in composition in 1969.
Gray moved to the San Diego area in the 1970s. Works from this period include Despedida (Canciones de Garcia Lorca) from 1970 and Jonah: Musical Based on the Bible Story from 1973. After moving back to Salisbury in 1984, she taught piano privately and composed approximately 20 works. In 1993 the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra performed the orchestral arrangement of her Animal Crackers: Eight Miniatures for Piano and her arrangement of Clementi's Sonatina, op. 36, no. 3. Gray has also written poetry and produced oil paintings.
