Frances Alice Kleeman papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains manuscript, facsimile, and printed scores of music by Kleeman and of scores inscribed to Kleeman by several of her former students, including Edward T. Cone, Mathilde McKinney, and Jonathan Elkus. Also included is a note from composer and pedagogue Nadia Boulanger, and correspondence and ephemera related to Elkus's musical drama Tom Sawyer. Materials date from approximately 1940-1960.

Biographical / Historical
Frances Alice Kleeman (1918-2009) was a music educator who taught at Miss Fine's School in Princeton, New Jersey, at the Friends School in Baltimore, and in schools in Philadelphia. Fluent in French and German, she worked as a translator during World War II and later as a medical translator for the Johns Hopkins International Exchange Program.
