Scope and Contents

The collection contains 16 photographs of Estelle Dennis, her students, and her associates. Included is a photograph by Baltimore Sun photographer A. Aubrey Bodine of Dennis and other dancers performing on the beach in 1947, a photograph of a dance at Rusty Rocks, and several photographs of an event featuring a singer and pianist. The collection also contains one hand-drawn poster for an event at the Estelle Dennis Dance Theatre.

Biographical / Historical

Estelle Dennis was a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Born in Baltimore in 1909, she started her career as a dancer in New York for the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and danced with Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn in the Denishawn Dance Company. After returning to Baltimore in 1930, she began teaching young dancers modern techniques from her Denishawn training. In 1933 she founded the Estelle Dennis Dance Theatre, which offered dance education and performances for decades in the Mount Vernon neighborhood and later at two branches outside Baltimore. She later transferred the studio to Louise Muse, a business partner and former student. Dennis died in 1996.

Ann Giroux is a historian who has conducted research on the Roland Park Company, including individuals associated with the company such as Estelle Dennis.
