Biographical / Historical

Ernst J. Lert was a conductor and writer who served as the operatic director for Peabody Conservatory from 1938 until the 1940s. Prior to working at Peabody, Lert led the opera department at the Curtis Institute of Music and was stage director of the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York from 1929 to 1931. From 1923 to 1929 Lert directed German operas at La Scala in Milan, Italy. Lert was well-known as a guest lecturer, conductor, and academic writer on operatic subjects.
