Scope and Contents

The Richard Benda papers, approximately 1950-2000, contain manuscript notebooks and transcriptions of Benda's teaching material concerned with the Schillinger system of musical composition. Also included are pedagogical materials in the form of notes, recordings, and an unpublished supplement to the Schillinger system. Materials were created in approximately the 1950s.

Biographical / Historical

Richard Benda (1908-1978), born Richard Bender, was a music arranger, composer, pianist and teacher. He studied with Joseph Schillinger for five years and was one of only a few students who were personally authorized to teach the Schillinger system of musical composition. He created a teaching program that is widely recognized as having made the system’s applications practical and approachable. Benda taught at the New School for Social Research and the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He also regularly wrote articles in the International Musician about the Schillinger system, sharing his education and research.

Abstract

Richard Benda was a pianist and teacher of the Joseph Schillinger system of musical composition. The Richard Benda papers contain manuscript notebooks and transcriptions of his teaching material concerned with the Schillinger system. Also included are pedagogical materials in the form of notes, recordings, and an unpublished supplement to the Schillinger system.

Arrangement

Notebooks in Series 1 were originally accompanied by the folders in Series 2. These material were separated during processing. Contact the Peabody Archives for the original order. The Schillinger Studies notebooks in Series 1 were originally housed in binders. These have been removed from the binders and placed in folders. All material remains in original order.
