Scope and Contents

The Austin Conradi papers, 1913-1971, contain a variety of material created and collected by Conradi during his career. These include concert programs, school essays, newspaper clippings, and a photograph. The bulk of Series 1 consists of correspondence primarily between Conradi and his former student Elizabeth Burnham, as well as letters from Conradi to his mother. Series 2 contains manuscript and published scores, transcriptions, and orchestrations, including a transcription by Austin's older brother, Luther Conradi, of J.S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.

Biographical / Historical

Austin Conradi was born in Baltimore in 1890. A graduate of Peabody Conservatory, he studied piano with Ernest Hutcheson and composition with Otis B. Boise. Conradi held many positions in his career, including head of the piano department, Hambourg Conservatory at Toronto, Canada, 1917-1918; teacher of piano, Curtis Institute, 1925-1926; director of the piano department, Chautauqua Institution, New York, 1935; member of the faculty, Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, 1936-1937; and soloist with the New York, Russian, Baltimore, Chautauqua, and Toronto Symphony Orchestras. In 1935, he was awarded an honorary doctor of music degree by St. John's College. Conradi also Peabody taught piano at the Peabody Conservatory for over 40 years. He died in 1965.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Letters from Austin Conradi to his mother, Minna, donated by Austin's daughter Connie in 1984. Letters between Austin Conradi and Elizabeth Burnham and some scores donated by Elizabeth's husband, Donald L. Burnham, in 1994.
