Scope and Contents
The collection is formed by 43 notebooks containing the student notes recorded by Samuel Grant Oliphant during his graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University from 1902 to 1907. Among the subjects included are Greek Rhetoric and Syntax, Latin Epigraphy, Romany Elegy, Bible Literature, and notes from Greek and Vedic Seminaries. A final item is an autograph book kept by Oliphant in 1881 while a student at the Phillips Exeter Academy.

Biographical Note
Samuel Grant Oliphant was a Classics scholar and professor of Greek and Sanskrit. He was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1864 and received the A.B. (1891) and the M.A. (1894) from Princeton. He began his graduate work at Johns Hopkins University in 1902 where he studied Greek, Latin and Sanskrit. Oliphant received the Ph.D. from Hopkins in 1904, was appointed Fellow, 1904-1906, and Harry F. Johnston Scholar in Sanskrit or Comparative Philology, 1906-1907. In 1911, Oliphant was appointed professor of Greek and Sanskrit at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. He was author of several books on classical literature and Philology including "Magic and Folk-lore in Plautus and Terence"(1902) and "Scholia" (1907). Samuel Grant Oliphant died in 1936.
