Student Organizations records
Scope and Contents
This collection contains records spanning from the 1890s to the 2000s for various student organizations on the Johns Hopkins campus. Types of records vary widely from organization to organization; many include membership lists, posters or announcements, while some also include correspondence. Class records include programs to Class events, especially for the Senior year, while publication records include issues of the publication; records of performing groups consist primarily of programs to their performances.
Unfortunately, records of student organizations are often rather sketchy, many groups having no extant records at all; we only know of their existence through yearbooks or handbooks. In other cases, only the most recent (or oldest) records survive, all others having been discarded at some time. As a rule, the records of student publications tend to be more complete.

Abstract
One of the first Hopkins student organizations, the Matriculate Society, was formed in 1883 to "foster the interests and promote the unity of the undergraduates." Since then, well over 150 student organizations have been established, most with similar goals; many have disbanded after a short period of time, while others have endured for as long as one hundred years. Types of records vary widely from organization to organization; many include membership lists, posters or announcements, while some also include correspondence. Class records include programs to class events, especially for senior year, while publication records include issues of the publication; records of performing groups consist primarily of programs to their performances.
Arrangement
Student organization records have been divided into several record groups. This record group (14.001) is a composite, encompassing those organizations for which not enough records are extant to justify assigning each one its own record group number.
Within this record group, records are arranged in alphabetical order by name of organization.
Custodial History
Most records were transferred to the Archives by the Special Collections Department of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library.
