The first registrar of the University, John M. Cross., was appointed by Daniel Coit Gilman on April 1, 1876. Cross was previously a tutor in Greek at Princeton University and served as registrar until 1880. He did not want to give up teaching and was also made an associate in Greek and Latin at Johns Hopkins. In 1881 Cross left to become the headmaster of a school in Lawrence, New Jersey. After Cross left the office was not formally filled until 1889. Thomas Randolph Ball had been serving as a recorder and was made registrar at this date. In 1920 Ryland N. Dempster became assistant registrar and registrar when Ball retired in 1923. Miss Irene Davis became Registrar when Dempster resigned in 1935 and remained in that office until her retirement in 1968. In the early days of the University the Registrar's Office was responsible for a wide range of duties including arranging for the publishing of Circulars, printing lecture notes, maintaining student records, and handling the admissions for undergraduates. Miss Davis also served on The Board of University Studies and the Committee on the Shriver Hall Murals. The Office of Registrar continued to perform admissions duties until 1946, when Bill Logan became Director of Admissions. After Ms. Davis, Robert E. Cyphers became Registrar in 1969 and served until 1991.
