Scope and Contents

The collection consists largely of research material collected by Sumner Chilton Powell to be used for his published work, Puritan Village: the Formation of a New England Town. Included are maps, photographs, microfilm, statistics, and photostats of records and legal documents, from 1948 to 1973. The documents are concerned with Sudbury and Suffolk, England, and Sudbury, Massachusetts. There are also student notes from Amherst and a typescript of Powell's thesis from Harvard.

Biographical Note

Sumner Chilton Powell was an author and historian. He was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, October 2, 1924. Powell received his B.A. from Amherst, and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1956. He taught in boys' schools in New England, and was an instructor in history at Yale University and Iona College.

Powell was the author of several historical works; his major publication was Puritan Village:The Formation of a New England Town, for which he spent almost six years gathering material from local records, archives, and private collections in England and Massachusetts. Chilton received the Pulitzer Prize for this work in 1964.
