Scope and Contents

Collection consists of one holographic letter of John Ramsay McCulloch written to Thomas Baring, Esquire MP, March 31, 1863. The letter was written after the publication of McCulloch's "A Treatise on the Principles and Practicle Influence of Taxation and the Funding System" in 1863. McCulloch writes in the letter that he is giving a copy to Thomas Baring, grandson of Sir Francis Baring, the founder of Baring's Bank. Thomas Baring was a managing partner of the commercial house from 1828 to 1873.

Biographical Note

J.R. McCulloch was a political economist, born at Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Scotland, March 1, 1789. In 1818, he edited the "Scotsman," but it was his contributions to the "Edinburgh Review" that established his importance as an economist. McCulloch acted as editor of several of the works of David Ricardo, and he was the editor of Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations." McCulloch taught economics at University College, London (1828-1832) and was appointed to the stationary office in 1838. Among his important works is "Statistical Account of the British Empire" (1837). J.R. McCulloch died in London, Nov. 11, 1864.
