Craufurd (George) of Rotterdam letter
Scope and Contents
The letter was written by George Craufurd of Rotterdam, a Dutch economist, to the Scottish economic writer, George Chalmers. In the letter, Craufurd discusses Chalmers' An estimate of the Comparative Strength of Great Britain during the present and four preceding reigns, and of the losses of her trade from every war since the revolution. He is specifically concerned with the question of bullion and its relation to the balance of trade.
The manuscript is bound, and shelved with the Hutzler manuscript collection. On the verso of the last page of the letter is written, in a different hand, "State of the Imports & Exports of Great Britain--the Balance of Trade--Bullion--etc. Various Remarks thereon in a Letter from Geo. Craufurd, Esq. to Geo. Chalmers, Esq. Dec. 1783.
