Scope and Contents

This is an artifically assembled collection, with materials chosen by the curators of Special Collections. The holding contains materials relating to, owned, or created by Robert Pirosh. The collection is composed of primarily leather bound typewritten screenplays, which were Pirosh's presentation volumes of his scripts from movie productions he was involved in. The holding also has related scripts not owned by Pirosh. The rest of the collection includes film stills, candid photographs, photographic negatives, and a press book relating to his films. Some images include Rock Hudson, Kurt Douglas, and Harpo Marx. The holding ranges in date from 1937 to 1967.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Pirosh (1910-1989) was an American film and television screenwriter, director, and producer. Pirosh was born in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from the Baltimore City College high school in 1928, completing his college studies at the Sorbonne in France and the University of Berlin in Germany. He was known for his war dramas and comedies. Pirosh's most critical success was Battleground (1949), a movie influenced by his World War II experiences as a Master Sergeant, earning him the Academy Award for Best Screenplay. As for comedic works, he co-wrote the screenplay for A Day at the Races (1937), performed by The Marx Brothers. His last major career contribution was screenwriting for the long-running The Waltons TV show in the 1980s. Towards the end of his career he taught writing at the University of Southern California. He passed away in December 1989.

The collection is organized by the film titles in alphabetical order and then by date.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The materials in this collection were purchased by Special Collections from 2013 to 2017, from Royal Books, Inc. and Clouds Hill Books. Some items were purchased by Special Collections with support by J. Murray Logan, in 2013 in memory of Helen Mildred Logan. Other items were also purchased with support from the Lidz Family Endowment Fund in 2013.
