Scope and Contents

Collection consists largely of letters (1838-1856, 58 items) written by Roger Brooke Taney to his son-in-law lawyer James Mason Campbell (1810-1869). Taney writes of family matters with some mention of professional activities from Washington, D.C., Old Point Comfort, Va., and White Sulphur Springs, Va. There are three letters (1819, 1826) to Campbell from his father, and single letters from Philip B. Key (1811), Michael Taney, Jr. (1815), and Henry L. Davis (1831).

Biographical Note

Roger Brooke Taney was an American politician and jurist. He was born in 1777. He served as U.S. Attorney General (1831-33), Secretary of the Treasury (1833-1834), and was the fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1836-1864). Roger Brooke Taney died in 1864.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was donated by Idella Swisher, widow of Hopkins's political science professor, Carl Brent Swisher, in 1973. Professor Swisher may have originally purchased the letters as part of his research on the Taney court.

Typed transcripts of some of the letters are available in the repository.
