Joseph Hopkinson letter to Abraham Walton
Scope and Contents
Letter from Joseph Hopkinson to Abraham Walton, 1797 November 26. Transcription is as follows: "I extremely regret that you suffer so much uneasiness on account of the business in my hands, particularly as I am well assured it is not much worth the attention of those concerned on the not. From all the information I have been able to collect I have no doubt that Parkyns is not worth a groat - Under this impression I have thought it most prudent not to sue him in the County where he resides, as he would there have no refuge from the gaol; and if confined would certainly discharge himself by our insolvent laws- I have therefore for some time past kept an officer on the watch to endeavour to take him in the city, where I believe he has friends that might be tempted either to advance the money for him or become his Bail- These have been the reasons of my conduct and the cause of the delay- I wish you to judge of them. If you shall think it most adviseable to bring the suit at once in the County where he resides I will do so."
