Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection concerns Christ's work within Johns Hopkins, especially relating to administrative tasks such as retirement plans. There are also materials concern his teaching within the Department of Economics which span several years. Subject Files are mostly concerned with Economic Library Selection pamphlets. The papers span from 1931 to 2006.

Biographical / Historical

Carl F. (Finley) Christ (1923-2017) was an American economist and a Professor Emeritus of Economics at Johns Hopkins University. He is known for his contributions in econometrics, including an early popular textbook. He studied at the University of Chicago and earned a Ph.D. in economics. From 1961-2005 served as Department Chair of Economics at Johns Hopkins University. He was also a professor or visiting professor and/or researcher at a variety of institutions, including the University of Chicago, University of Tokyo, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the University of Essex, the Bank of Japan, and the Chinese Universities Development Project II at Fudan University Shanghai.

He was the author of three books, over forty articles, and more than sixty other publications. His main research interests were econometric methods (especially the testing and evaluation of econometric models), monetary and fiscal policy (especially the government budget restraint), and the history of econometrics.

His numerous honors include a George Owen Teaching Award from Johns Hopkins and a Professional Achievement Citation from the University of Chicago Alumni Association. He has served on many boards and panels, including the Econometric Society, the American Economic Association, and the National Science Foundation.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

These papers were donated by their creator, Dr. Christ, in 2007.

Appraisal

A series marked "Restricted Materials" was deaccessioned because of low research value and constraints on access.

Processing Information

Finding aid prepared by Kelly Spring on 28 December 2010, with additional processing by Annie Tang in 2015. Ye Ji Choi conducted an inventory check in 2019.
