This collection contains photocopies of handwritten lectures given by Alexandre Chessin, a professor of Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University, from the 1895-1896 academic year. They are collectively titled: Introduction into the Study of the Theory of Functions--Lectures Delivered at J.H.U. in 1895-96 by Alexandre S. Chessin--Part I. Functions of Real Variables. This was most likely a textbook that could be purchased by students of the time.

Biographical / Historical

Alexandre Chessin (also known as Alexander Chessin) was born in St. Petersburg in 1866 during the period of the Russian Empire. He was a professor of Pure and Applied Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University from 1895 to 1899. He also taught at Harvard and Columbia Universities.

Abstract

This collection contains photocopies of handwritten lectures given by Chessin from the 1895 to 1896 academic year, collectively titled: "Introduction into the Study of the Theory of Functions--Lectures Delivered at J.H.U. in 1895-96 by Alexandre S. Chessin--Part I. Functions of Real Variables"

Immediate Source of Acquisition

These lectures were donated by the Davidson College Library in May 2007. Prior to that, the volume was donated by Mary Douglas Stauffer, niece of James McDowell Douglas, the original owner of the lectures who was a graduate student in Physics at Johns Hopkins University.
