Biographical/Historical note

Gottfried Dietze (1922-2006) was born in Germany and received a scholarship to enroll in the PhD program at Harvard University after World War II. Although he initially accepted the offer, he left shortly thereafter and moved to New Jersey to attend Princeton University from which he received his PhD. He wrote his first book, The Federalist, derived from his dissertation, and it was by far Dietze's most influential and well known work.

He was a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) for 50 years. His academic interests were centered around the rule of law, judicial review, and governmental power.

These are the professional papers of Dietze, including, but not limited to, research notes, typed drafts of his writings, correspondence, and teaching materials.

Arrangement note

The collection is arranged by three series: Writings, Correspondence, and Personal. The folders in Writings are primarily arranged by a work's title in alphabetical order, while the folders in the two other series were left in original order.

Immediate Source of Acquisition note

This collection was transferred to Special Collections from the SAIS office of Professor Dietze after his death in 2006. An additional transfer accrual was added in 2014.
