Biographical / Historical

Frederick Holborn was July 9, 1928 in Heidelberg, Germany and raised in New Haven, Conneticut along with his sister, Hanna Holborn Gray, former President of both Yale University and University of Chicago. Their father, Hajo Holborn was an early faculty member of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

After graduating from Harvard in 1949, Frederick Holborn held many public policy-related positions with the federal government, specifically with the Department of the Interior. Then, from 1954 to 1959, he taught at Harvard University and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) until 1959, when he began to serve as a legislative assistant for Senator John Kennedy.

Holborn worked in the White House until joining the faculty of SAIS in 1971. He taught courses on foreign policy, Congress, and the American political process. Additionally, he was a consultant to Congress and the Congressional Fellowship Program of the American Political Science Association through most of the 1970s while teaching at SAIS. He retired as a full-time professor in December 1998 and died on June 3, 2005 at the age of 76.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Professor Holborn's papers were transferred to Special Collection from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies after Professor Holburn's passing in June 2005.
