Scope and Contents
These papers include several speeches by Stewart and a scrapbook of condolences sent to the Stewart family after his death in 1900. The speeches are either printed or handwritten by Stewart himself, and condolences come in the form of clippings of obituaries, letters, and cards. The collection spans circa 1890 to 1900.

Biographical / Historical
C. (Charles) Morton Stewart (1829-1900) was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1829, the son of Senator David Stewart of Maryland. C. Morton Stewart was senior partner at the firm of Morton Stewart & Company of Baltimore (extensive coffee importers and shipping merchants). A prominent businessman, he was also President of the Board of Trustees at Johns Hopkins University.

These papers were donated by Katherine F. Baetjer, great-great granddaughter of C. Morton Stewart, in accruals from 2003 to approximately 2004 or 2005.
