Scope and Contents

Collection consists of a large selection of Julian C. Stanley's published reprints, abstracts, reports, and seminar papers (1949-1968) in the field of educational psychology. Also in the collection are photocopies of a series of lectures presented by Egbertus Rudolf van Kampen at the University of Leiden, 1926-1928.

Biographical Note

Julian C. Stanley was a professor of psychology at Johns Hopkins University. He was born in Macon, Georgia on July 9, 1918. He received his B.S. from Georgia Southern College in 1927 and his Ed.D from Harvard in 1949.

Dr. Stanley taught at George Peabody College, Vanderbilt University and the University of Wisconsin before coming to Hopkins in 1967 as professor of psychology. He published widely in the field of educational psychology, and is known for his research in methods of learning measurement and statistics. He founded the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY), as well as a related research project, the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY), whose work has, since 1980, been supplemented by the Julian C. Stanley Study of Exceptional Talent (SET), which provides academic assistance to gifted children. Stanley was also widely known for his classic book, coauthored with Donald Campbell, on the design of educational and psychological research - Experimental and Quasi-experimental Designs for Research.
