 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: MS-0532

Scope and Contents

This is group of letters written by H. L. Mencken to colleague and girlfriend Leda V. Bauer. Most letters date from December 1928 through February 1929 with a few into 1930. Mencken writes of gifts they have exchanged, setting times to meet Bauer in New York, her writing projects and his health.

One letter, undated, is on letterhead from the Loyal Legion of American Mothers. This appears to be one of Mencken's joke printings.

There is one letter (1924) from J. G. Clemenceau Le Clercq [Paul Tanaquil] to Leda discussing his novel manuscript. He has dedicated it to Mencken and is asking her to pass it to him. There are 2 pieces of ephemera enclosed in letters. "The Movie" from the Free Tract Society and "An Educational Radio: Some Notes by Upton Sinclair (Not for publication at present, please.)"
