George H. Thompson began collecting material by, about, and related to Henry Louis Mencken in 1962.

Scope and Contents

The Thompson collection is comprised of books, pamphlets, and periodicals as well as manuscript letters and writings, recordings, printed ephemera, and photographs. The printed material is cataloged in Catalyst and shelved at the George Peabody Library. The related manuscript and non-book material are part of this manuscript collection also housed at the Peabody Library.

Arrangement

The items in MS 491 have been arranged in 11 series, 5 boxes. The individual issues of magazines are Series 12, 89 boxes.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was acquired by the Sheridan Libraries in 2006. It was part gift from Thompson's wife Betty and son Bradford G. Thompson, and part purchase.
