Biographical Note

Derek Alton Walcott was born in St. Lucia, West Indies, in 1930. He and his twin brother Roderick were born to an English father who worked as an artist and an African mother who was a teacher. Walcott attended St. Mary's College, Castries and the University College of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. He began writing poetry at the age of eighteen, and began writing plays not long after.

Walcott moved to Trinidad in 1953. He worked as a teacher and then as a journalist, writing for the Trinidad Guardian. He received a Rockefeller Foundation award to study theater in New York from 1958-1959, and returned to Trinidad and founded the Trinidad Theater Workshop.

Derek Walcott has published numerous collections of poetry and plays and has won numerous awards. In 1992, he received the Nobel Prize for literature. He divided his time between Massachusettes, where he taught part time at Boston University, and the island of St. Lucia.

This item was part of the McDowell Collection purchase in 1977. It was transferred to Special Collections by Pierre E. Berry on July 13, 1977.
