Scope and Contents
The collection consists of two volumes of a three volume set. The location of Volume I is unknown. Volume II contains exercises on laying out and dividing land; the application of algebra to geometry; and problems related to the parabola and ellipse. Volume III relates to Lewis' spherical projections, and astronomical projections and transits.

Biographical Note
Little is known about George S. Roberts except that he was a boarding student at Benjamin Hallowell's academy in Alexandria, Virginia in 1855. Roberts may have been a son of Dr. George C.M. Roberts, but this information has not been verified. Hallowell was a Quaker schoolmaster, scientist and farmer.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The volumes were found uncataloged in the Special Collections cage in 1989. They may have been a bequest of J. Wesley Cole.
