Scope and Contents
The Loewenberg Clipping Collection consists of articles removed from German newspapers, 1880-1930. All items are written in German.
The clippings are largely reviews and critiques of theatrical productions, playwrights, and literary events of the period. The collector, Alfred Loewenberg, was known to have accumulated voluminous data for his published work, The Annals of Opera (1943), and in a similar fashion, he accumulated a huge number of clippings describing and reporting on one of the major German literary periods.
In Boxes 1 and 2 are play reviews that correspond to titles in Lowenberg's play collection. These are arranged alphabetically by the playwright's name. As an example, reviews of Das Märchen vom Wolf (1912) are filed under the name, Ferenc Molnár. Critiques of Bernard Shaw's works are filed in Box 2.
There is also a large number of critical reviews by Alfred Kerr (1867-1918), a prolific writer about the stage. Kerr's reviews are filed in Boxes 2 and 3. A large group of clippings relates to the works of Thomas Mann in Box 4. The final items in Box 4 are miscellaneous reviews of other dramatists including Strindberg, Ibsen, O'Neill, and Lessing.

Biographical Note
Dr. Alfred Loewenberg (1902-1949), a Berliner by birth, was an author and bibliographer. He assembled a collection of modern German plays that included almost every production staged during a very creative period in the German theater, 1880-1930. The works cover several stylistic periods in playwriting beginning with Naturalism, a dominant style in the 1890s, followed by Impressionism and Expressionism in the 1920s. Noted writers of the period include Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gerhart Hauptmann, Arthur Schnitzler, and Georg Kaiser. Dr. Loewenberg also collected plays in translation of European playwrights Tolstoy, Maeterlinck, Ibsen, and Strindberg who were known to have influenced the German authors.
Along with the play collection, Dr. Loewenberg assembled a large collection of articles from German newspapers that were related to the plays, the playwrights, or the business of theater. Reviews, criticisms, interviews, commentary, and other theatrical reports complement the play collection. Dr. Lowewnberg may have planned to compile a history of modern German drama, and the collection of contemporary journalism would have added to his research. After 1935, Dr. Loewenberg lived in London, and it is interesting to note that he did publish a bibliography of theater in Britain: The Theatre of the British Isles, excluding London: A Bibiography. (1950).
Alfred Loewenberg died in London in 1949.
