Scope and Contents

Collection consists of sixteen manuscripts written in Latin and in English, spanning the years 1383-1722. The manuscripts are legal documents dealing with the leases, rents, sale, and grants of land in England. The counties of Devon and York are listed in three of the documents, and Southron (referring to South England) is also indicated. The Latin manuscripts are not fully translated.

Biographical Note

Henry J. Young was an archivist and a professor of history. He was born in York, PA Feb. 16, 1908. Young received the A.B. from Franklin & Marshall College (1932) and the Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins University in 1955. Young later studied at Oxford University, 1965-66. Young was director of the Historical Society of York County, Pennsylvania (1933-1949) and archivist for the Pennsylvania History and Museum Commission (1951-1957). In 1957, Young joined the faculty of Dickinson College where he taught until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1973.
