Scope and Contents

The collection of physicist, Gustav A. Liebig, consists of three photographs and two reprints. Two photographs are of notable Hopkins faculty members: the physicist Henry A. Rowland (1848-1901) and the mathematician Thomas Craig (1855-1900). The third photograph is of British physicist, Baron William Thomson Kelvin (1824-1907) who lectured at the University on molecular dynamics and the wave theory of light in 1884.

Also in the collection is a reprint of an article published by Liebig, "On the Electrostatic Force required to produce Sparks in Air and other Gases" (Philosophical Magazine, July 1987). The second reprint is an article by Lord Kelvin entitled "On Stationary Waves in Flowing Water" originally published in Vols. 22 & 23 of the Philosophical Magazine. The article was autographed by Lord Kelvin and included a personal greeting to Liebig, dated December 22, 1886.

Biographical Note

Gustav A. (Gustave Adolph) Liebig was born in 1861. He resided in Baltimore, MD and was taught privately by Dr. E. Deichmann, professor of Classical Languages at the E. M. Lamb School. Liebig entered The Johns Hopkins University in 1879 and received the A.B. degree in 1882. His graduate work was in the field of Physics, and he received the Ph.D. degree in 1885. He was a Fellow by Courtesy, 1883-1885, a Fellow, 1885-1887, Assistant in Electricity, 1887- 1890, and again a Fellow by Courtesy, 1890-1891. Liebig was the author of Practical Electricity in Medicine and Surgery published in 1890 by F.A. Davis, Philadelphia. He left Hopkins in 1891 to join the staff of the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Gustave A. Liebig died in 1897.
