Scope and Contents

The collection consists of papers of mathematician and Johns Hopkins professor, Rufus Isaacs (1914-1981). They relate to his work in differential games, a field which he originated. Included are conference material, correspondence with colleagues, reprints of articles, a photocopy of his first paper on differential games from the Rand Corporation, and a draft of the preface for the 1965 edition of "Differential Games." Conference material includes items from the International Congress of Mathematics, Moscow, 1966. Materials span in date from 1941 to 1975.

Biographical Note

Rufus Isaacs (1914-1981) was a mathematician and the creator of a field of mathematics called differential games. He was born in New York City, in 1914, did undergraduate work at M.I.T., and earned his Ph.D. at Columbia. Between 1947 and 1967, Isaacs held posts with the aircraft industry, the Rand Corporation, the Institute for Defense Analyses, and the Center for Naval Analyses.

Isaacs was a professor of applied mathematics, 1967-1977, at the Johns Hopkins University. In 1963, Isaacs published Differential Games, and was awarded the Lanchester Prize in 1965. He addressed many national and international meetings for mathematicians, and was the author of many papers on pure and applied mathematics.
