George B. Coale letters

 Collection — Box: BW-13
Identifier: MS-0269

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of ten letters to George B. Coale, including hand-written letters from Edwin Booth, John H. Wheeler, and Charlotte Cushman. A typed copy of letter from Oliver Wendell Holmes (dated August 24, 1881) is also present. The letters range in date from 1832 to 1881.

The letters include a typed copy of an undated letter by an unknown 13 year old correspondent describing a cholera outbreak in Poughkeepsie, New York. The collection also includes a note, perhaps written by an archivist, providing some context for the letter from Edwin Booth: "Jervis Mc Entee, Sanford R. Gifford and Launt Thompson were artists living in New York and were intimate friends of both Edwin Booth and George B. Coale. The "Fair" was one held in Baltimore shortly after the Civil War for the benefit of Union soldiers."

  • Creation: 1832, 1852, 1853, 1877, 1878, 1881
