Scope and Contents

Collection consists of two letters and one envelope. The letters were written (August 23, 1861 and October 28, 1861) to Johnny Wilde in Selma, Alabama from Emilie Bailey in Wilmington, North Carolina. The stationery is decorated with symbols of the Confederate States of America. Bailey wrote from the Palmetto Hotel in Wilmington, North Carolina where she and her family were delayed by the outbreak of war. Apparently, Bailey was a part of a theatrical family. The letters give some description of her life in Wilmington and her fondness for friends in Selma.

The letters were given to Johns Hopkins University by Miss Eugenia Wilde in 1948.
